panayiotis koulouras
ephemeral memorials

9 DECEMBER 2010 - 22 JANUARY 2011
OPENING: THURSDAY 9 DECEMBER, 20.00

Panayiotis Koulouras (born in 1973) lives and works in Athens. He graduated from the Athens School of Fine Arts in June 2007. He has participated in a number of group shows. Currently, he is partaking in "Time, People, Their stories" curated by Manos Stefanidis at the Benaki Museum.

In the present series "Ephemeral Memorials", painted marble fragments are being exhibited. Realistically portrayed themes have been selected from daily press photographs, yet without being subject to any kind of direct evaluation. By either juxtaposing or combining depictions of political leaders, pop idols, oppressors and/or victims, the artist examines the notions of brevity and monumentality, triviality and significance, oblivion ('lethe') and truth as well as those of collective memory and amnesia, which in the end and after all shape our common collective consciousness.

The events that are illustrated start out in 2009 and cover all of 2010, and were published weekly in the Athens Voice. The artist will continue to add works throughout the duration of the show.
